Keegan was born in 2000 and faced many of the same challenges that most people with Moebius do, especially in those early years. His strength amazes me, I’m not talking about physical strength as much as I’m talking about his spirit, his will and his character (Yes, he’s got plenty of that- a cheeky monkey just like most of the Moebians I’ve met!).
He’s always open to new challenges and even though he may start out worried or scared he always sticks to his motto, “never quit, never give up”. When he was little (3 or so) he did gymnastics and it was tough but he got through it and he got better each time. Then, the spring before kindergarten he joined our local t-ball team and did well but chose not to go back. We’ve always been strict about that, once you start something you have to finish the term and if you don’t want to go back then you don’t have to. His next feat was learning to play piano which he thoroughly enjoyed because of his amazing teacher. Then as the weather got better he turned to horseback riding and he’s a natural, he won 3 ribbons! He’s a ‘blue tail’ in beaver scouts, just one more year until cubs. Presently, he’s mastering rock climbing which was suggested by his OT at school, another amazing person. On his 2nd lesson he made it to the top of a 20’ wall, the next time the 25’ wall and on his third lesson he was starting to make it look easy. His incentive is the Jones Soda cooler that is stocked and every week he gets to try a new flavor. Watching him overcome new challenges amazes me because I realize how much more effort he needs to put in than the average Joe.
We had a fabulous time at the last conference (as usual) and it was so good to see some familiar faces & make some new friends. School is demanding and the challenges are becoming evermore apparent even though he is just in grade one. He’s trying really hard and is above grade level in reading. He’s also been working on his social skills and has made some good close friends.
We’re very proud of him as anyone reading this must have already guessed. “Time is your friend” to quote the amazing Vicky McCarrell!
